How to start your skincare journey and How to find the right skincare?

You heard of glass skin, and 10 step Korean skin care. Trigger words, Trigger words. What is real? What really works?

First and foremost I want to say this hands down. SKINCARE IS ABOUT DILIGENCE!

There is no magic elixir, just because you bought XYZ product. If you only use it a hand full of times. I guarantee it will not work. Also not every product will work for you.

Great skin takes time and effort, It doesn’t have to be 10 steps worth of effort, but some.

  • Cleanse your face before bed and in the morning. (Cleanse doesn’t always mean with soap, it maybe be a simple rinse with water in the morning or a spritz of toner)
  • Apply Skincare from thinnest to thickest in consistency. (Ex. Toners>Serums>Creams>Balms)
  • Slathering every product you bought at the same time will not make it better (Loading your skin will multiple products, may overload your skin and depending on skin type, may cause breakouts or facial troubles)
  • Be Mindful of active ingredients ( There are a variety of active ingredients in skincare that are available over-the-counter. These active ingredients can be harsh and stacking multiple on top can be damaging to your skin barrier. Ex Retin-A, Tretinoin, Differin A, Vitamin C, Benzoyl peroxide, Lactic Acid)
  • Work with your skin type (Identifying your skin type : Oily, Combo, Dry, etc should change the products you use. For instance Oily skin should avoid heavy dense creams daily as it can increase and trap the oils produced; or person with dry skin should reach for richer products than gel creams as it may not provide enough moisturize to sooth the dryness.)
  • Cycle your products ( It may be a hassle but have a regime, a cycle of which days to use which products to help rotate products to bring about a desired result and prevent point 3 & 4 )
  • Start small and add products as needed ( Start with a good base: Cleanser, Toner, Moisturizer. Give it time to see if any of those are breaking you out, if all is good, then introduce a new product and repeat the process. Some products have a purging process like Retin-A but otherwise if a product is breaking you out , introducing products one at a time can whittle down which is the culprit.)
  • Give it time to work (Skincare is not magic, give the products and your skin time to work.)
  • Know your expectations ( Skincare is not a dermatologic procedure, so don’t expect it to treat the impossible. Ex. Pitted Acne Scarring, even in dermatology those are hard to treat, usually requiring laser and heavy peels to relieve some of the scarring. Your at-home skincare that barely stings isn’t going to make those scars go away. However your skincare can prevent or quickly help, fresh new acne from scarring or causing discolorations. We wish our skincare can do it all cause it would be cheaper than getting a medical procedure but that is why we need to curb our expectations to be reasonable.)
  • Enjoy the process (Stressing about it isn’t going to help, Stress causes hair loss, fatigue, anxiety. Let your skincare be a moment to relax and vibe. It’s stressful if you have acne but stressing and picking will only make it worse and inflamed. Take a deep breath and know you are doing something about it and It will get better )

Here are recommendations of products that are great bases to start with.
